Jonathan Brown
Modern Mosaics, Inc. began as an idea in the head of 18 year old Jonathan Brown. Leaving behind friends, family and an apprenticeship building fountains and water walls in the landscaping business, Jonathan headed for Houston, Texas in 1991 to realize a dream.
That dream was to build from the ground up the most unique custom design and manufacturing studio in the industry. The underlying concept was to combine the timeless craft of mosaic art with that of 20th century art, furnishings and décor. Jonathan spent several months touring Central America.
During this period, he drew several hundred portraits, designs and concepts that were to be the springboard for the company. Teaming up with metal artist and first cousin Danny Brown and other members and supporters of the Houston art scene, Jonathan’s vision began to take form with the incorporation of Modern Mosaics, Incorporated in 1992 as successor to his original DBA Modern Youth. From 1992-1995 Jonathan, Danny and several others in the company began attracting the attention of private collectors, the art community and its supporters and the media with his prodigious output of new products and designs. Inspired by the masters of the last 200 years and dedicated to producing classic works of excellence and in the process, stretching the boundaries of the art form, Modern Mosaics opened its first studio and gallery in the Erie City Iron Works building in the now trendy Loft District Of Downtown Houston.
